Would you ever dream of buying a home without "shopping around," or booking a family vacation without comparing hotel and airline rates?

Making major purchases should never be left to chance. Doing your homework first can help you make confident decisions and may save you from regret.

The same can be said about shopping for cars. With the myriad of choices and options available in vehicles today, shopping for the right car shouldn't be a guessing game. Examining your needs and the market can help you make an educated purchase.

Thinking of buying a car? MetLife offers these tips to help you get started:

  • Evaluate your needs. Are you more likely to be cruising with your friends in a racy sports car or is shuttling the kids to and from soccer practice more your speed? Think lifestyle first, looks later.
  • How often will the car be used? Where? If you think you'll log an average number of miles per year (about 12,000), then a car with a midsize engine may be sufficient. But if out-of-town business trips or weekend excursions are a regular part of your life, then a larger engine is best suited to handle the long hauls. Also, consider where you do most of your daily driving. For instance, you won't want a sporty convertible if rough back roads are taken on your daily commute.
  • Do some research before you shop. From current prices and features to total model evaluations, you'll find more than enough car information at the library, bookstore and Internet to give you a heads up before heading to the car lots. Once you've determined the features and options that are most important to you, set a price range and stick to it. Once on the lot, compare sticker prices, review standard and optional features, take test drives, and most importantly, ask questions.
  • Along with purchasing your car, consider which auto insurance provider and amount of coverage best suits your needs. Although many states require just basic liability coverage, you'll want to choose a package that will best protect you, your family, your car and your assets. When searching for a provider, get quotes and compare prices and services from at least three different insurers. Looking to trim the cost of your auto insurance? Don't forget that a good driving record lowers your insurance rates.
