Summer travel season is here. But for many Americans, high prices at the gas pumps are putting a major crimp in their vacation plans. A new survey conducted by Thrifty Car Rental shows a whopping 80 percent of those surveyed say rising gas prices made an impact on their household plans this year.
The survey also found that 39 percent of drivers say gas prices have forced them to stay home more often while 18 percent said it was the reason they changed their travel plans. They also found that of those who have cancelled recent car rental plans, 64 percent said it was due to gas prices.
Experts recommend the following money-saving travel tips:
- Set aside money specifically for gasoline to avoid racking up unexpected debt
- Use regular gas instead of premium
- Map your trips carefully to make sure you're taking the shortest, most direct routes
This summer, Thrifty Car Rental is easing the trip for 61 lucky travelers. Now through July 31st, the company is giving one person each day a year's worth of free gas. Winners will receive a pre-paid gas card worth $1800.
