Despite Recent Gains Big 3 Brands Headed for Dip Below 50 Percent of U.S. Market

AutoWeek   27 Jul 2005 14:22 GMTPage rating:

It could happen this year or next. But this much is certain: The Big 3's domestic brands no longer will account for a majority of cars and light trucks sold to individuals in the United States.

According to R.L. Polk & Co.'s retail registration data, the Big 3 clung to 53.6 percent of the U.S. retail market last year, down dramatically from 62.0 percent in 1999.

By contrast, Asian brands accounted for 38.6 percent of U.S. retail registrations, up from 30.9 percent. European brands made up the rest and have stayed relatively flat.
