GEICO Encourages Residents to Prepare for Tropical Storm Ophelia

GEICO   14 Sep 2005 14:41 GMTPage rating:

Since weather forecasters are predicting that Tropical Storm Ophelia could develop into a more serious situation as it travels along the Atlantic seacoast, GEICO recommends a number of preparedness steps.

 Hurricane Preparedness

   * Plan an evacuation route and learn safe routes inland. Be ready to
     drive 20 to 50 miles inland to locate a safe place.
   * Keep your car(s) fueled.
   * Have disaster supplies on hand, including:
         - flashlight and extra batteries
         - portable, battery-operated radio and batteries
         - first aid kit and manual
         - emergency food and water
         - non-electric can opener
         - essential medicines
         - cash and credit cards
         - sturdy shoes
   * Make arrangements for pets.
   * Make sure that all family members are prepared. Teach family members
     how and when to turn off gas, electricity, and water.
   * Teach children to call 9-1-1, police, or fire department and which
     radio station to tune to for emergency information.
   * Protect your windows.
   * Develop an emergency communication plan.
   * Ask an out-of-state relative or friend to serve as the "family
     contact."  After a disaster, it's often easier to call long distance.
     Make sure everyone in the family knows the name, address, and phone
     number of the contact person.

GEICO policyholders who may sustain damage to their vehicles are directed to call in their claims to 1-800-841-3000 or to go to http://www.geico.com/ as soon as possible so the company can begin processing their claim immediately.
