Iteris Inc., a provider of vision-based technology that enhances driver safety, today announced that the Iteris Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system will now be offered as part of the Technology Package on all 2006 Infiniti FX models at 177 dealerships nationwide.
In 2004, Infiniti became the first vehicle manufacturer to offer the Iteris LDW system on passenger cars in North America. The system was previously offered as part of the DVD Mobile Entertainment System and Lane Departure Warning Package on the 2005 FX. Also offered in the Technology Package is the Infiniti Navigation System, Intelligent Cruise Control and satellite radio with choice of XM or Sirius providers.
Iteris developed the sophisticated, vision-based LDW technology to help address the nation's single largest cause of automotive-related highway fatalities - unintended lane changes caused by distracted or drowsy drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 1.5 million automobile accidents are caused by distracted or drowsy drivers, claiming the lives of over 23,000 people every year in the U.S.
The LDW system, jointly developed with Valeo, is the first production application of the technology in the North American passenger car market. The LDW system uses a vision-based camera and proprietary software algorithms to monitor the lane markings in front of the vehicle. If a driver makes an unintentional lane departure (without using a turn signal), the system automatically emits an audible warning that alerts the driver to take corrective action.
