Have 4x4 passport with 220k miles. Has always run great. Noticed a
"ticking" while in gear last week. Twice this weekend the engine revved
and the tac raced while going up a hill. I let up on the gas, and it
slipped back into gear. Any ideas?
Do i need a new transmnission? Is it worth getting a new transmission? how
much is a new transmission?

Automagic, or manual?

Automatic: probaly a rebuild job if lucky.

Manual: Clutch is shot, tranny is probably OK.

With 220K miles, you probably have gotten your money's worth out of it
already. Either fix for above would be expensive, thousands for a
automatic rebuild (guess, on my part) and perhaps as much as a
thousand for a clutch (depends on many things, including the flywheel
condition, etc.

more like 1500 - 2000 for a clutch (if a V6)... I just did my wife's
'93 Rodeo.. the clutch set from advance was $400.. the one from NAPA
was almost $600... (didn't get that one).  the Rodeo/Passport is
pretty miserable to work on to... no room to work, and getting the
pull type release bearing off of the clutch fork is a compete bitch.
it took me and a buddy 16 hrs to change my wife's clutch.  I had a
lift and all tools required, pneumatic or otherwise.

hth,
Bret
