Any informed opinion or pointer to good articles on the subject would be
much appreciated.

Two different criteria:
- my wife: a safe, predictable, easy-to-drive car on snow-covered road.  She
tends to step on the gas and brake rather abruptly
- me: like to have some fun too.  Maintennce cost is a concern.

She shouldnt be driving on snow.

Audi with its quattro seems to have the more grown system. BMW's 4x4 is
more an add on to some models.

Both will be costly to maintain and repair.

I'd get the Audi.
