AT Commander - 24 Mar 2005 02:47 GMT I've got an '87 Samurai with humble mods (tires, catback, headers, cage). It hasn't been driven much in the last 5 years, but now it's my daily driver in addition to fun adventure vehicle on the weekend.
I've got an idle problem. Either it's racing at 3,000 or stumbling along at less than 1,000 rpm (or stalling). Anybody got any idea what might be going on here? It's a Carb, not Fuel Injected. I played with idle settings, but the chaotic racing/stalling hasn't changed.
Gotta get it fixed before the ZookiMelt this summer!
Thanks for any info... - ATC
P.S. Please post because my email is so full of spam every day that it's pretty much useless :-(

I couldn't believe the change in response and power from that change! (Of course if you are in CA or some other severe smog inspecting state, this may not fly. Also, the choke on it sucked and cold (read -20F) weather caused it to not start without a shot of starting fluid.)

Zenteren - 24 Mar 2005 10:48 GMT Just remove the solenoid valve from the right side of the carb body. You will see it easily cause it's the only thing with the wire. Use the compressor and blow in side while the engine is off, hold the compressor nozzle for couple of seconds. First while you removing the solenoid valve make sure that you don't lost the o-ring seal. Also check is it working properly (Put the solenoid body on - pole on the battery and the wire to + terminal and see if it opens. Your first and secondary jets are blocked with the junk that's why doesn't work. The best thing to do is to disassemble the whole carb and clean it with the carb cleaner and replace all bad parts. Never go with WEBER carb cause you will kill your engine, cause it's getting too much fuel in cylinders and just washing them so they burn out quickly. And second thing Webers are always flooding on steep angles.

Hey, how about some documentation on this?

AT Commander - 25 Mar 2005 04:33 GMT Thanks for your inputs, guys. I'm not planning to change out my carb because I like the stock carb. At 11,000 feet or thereabout, the folks with aftermarket carbs were having problems. At 14,000 few folks were running well any more. Some folks had problems on ascents up the steeps, and some folks had stalling on the way down. My stock carb outperformed 'em all on that trip - and sold me on keepin' it! I guess I'll go the carb cleaner route. Will it hurt anything to hose it down with carb cleaner without removing it, or will the cleaner have to be wiped off? Thanks again, Zook Folks!
Carl Saiyed - 25 Mar 2005 05:01 GMT I like B-12 Chemtool. I'll use a whole can and a fresh toothbrush on a carb. However, that is on a big 4-barrel. I would think you could do your Zuk's carb on 1/3 of a can. It'll be hard to start at first and run rough for a few, but it should be fine.

Kerouac - 26 Mar 2005 06:30 GMT Just out of curiosity (and a temporary need to live vicariously through others), where are you four wheeling at 14,000 ft.?

AT Commander - 27 Mar 2005 03:43 GMT Colorado rockies. There are a lot of high spots to go, some of 'em over 14K feet. The last 'teener I did was Mt Bross. You get funny looks from hikers up there... ;-)

Suzuki Samurai?s are pretty damn cool.. they go anywhere and are Supre cheap to fix, plus the mods you can do to one is like never ending!!
That just my take anyways

I lived in Leadville for 13 years and was able to go over it in a 2 wheel drive pick up. (4 speed). Warren
AT Commander - 31 Mar 2005 04:56 GMT Sorry,Warren... I moved to Illinois last year and the only 'wheelin' here is through cornstalks and mud. :-(

I had the same problem on my '90 sam. I replaced the stock carb with the carb from a 1000cc daihatsu charade with manual choke. A lot less vacuum hoses, started immediately and didn't stall or anything. I got it for 25 euros at my local breakers, fitted perfectly. Be sure to also get the manual choke cable.
It was a 30 min. fix, a lot quicker than cleaning the stock carb. :-)

AT Commander - 31 Mar 2005 04:55 GMT Great suggestion! Thanks!

And here are some pictures of my conversion: http://webdisk.planet.nl/hup00026/publiek/album/samurai/thijscarb
It's really easy! (and you get the manual choke as a bonus)
