i have a 1989 s10 blazer 4x4 w/ a 4.3l. the battery light goes on and off.
when it goes on the volts jump and the dash lights and the headlights get
really bright. when it goes off the lights and dash go back to normal. is
this the battery or the altenator or something else?

I had this happen to me and the problem was that the voltage regulator
in the alternator was shot (most likley from the system that i have in
it hehe). My voltage regulator was installed directly on the
alternator so i had to replace the whole thing but yours might be
different

The '89 S10 alternator has the integrated regulator (most GM vehicles from
at least the early 80's on do). On some alternators, it is possible to
disassemble the alternator and replace the regulator. But it's a bit of a
pain (mostly becuase of the brushes, which probably need replacing, too) and
new alternators are relatively inexpensive so you might as well replace it.

I would also check your battery connections, check for corrossion and
tightness, a terminal cleaner is pretty cheap at a hardware store, id keep it
in the glove box. other than that, the other suggestions were pretty much
what I was thinking, the alternator. hey, anyone interestid in mini trucks, I
need help with my lil mazda beater/project truck, tips and suggestions needed
please.

Check grounds between the battery, engine block and frame as well.
