There is plenty on google if you search with "awd vs 4wd". Look for
the caches version of "Why is conventional Awd useless off-road..."

With the strong warning that like most simple answers, the above one
could just be wrong.   e.g AWD with transfer case and locking
capability.    Plus you get the benefit of AWD on road, unlike a part
time 4wd that you may or may not be able to shift on the fly.

Or, more importantly, there are far more differences between any given
two examples of AWD or 4WD than there are differences between AWD and
4WD.
