1989 Dodge Power Ram 100

116,000.00 miles. Automatic. V8 engine.  My husband and I bought this truck
a couple of months ago.  It has black smoke coming out of it when you give
it gas and it stalls going up hill.  Any ideas what could be wrong with it
before I go into a garage and have them rake me over the coals?

Thanks.

If it is fuel injected a scan will pinpont the problem, if carbureted, there
a quite a few possibilities for an over rich condition. This truck can be
tough to work on because of the engine location, trust this to a qualified
tech.

One easy thing to check is the air intake, I've seen birds completely plug
these with their nests to the point where the truck would barely run at all.
And this is the season for bird nests. ;-)

MAYBE start by inspecting the air filter....
