I'm not sure what a split would do to cleaning unless you mean a seam, where
it must be vacuumed first to get the particulates out. A possible problem
with perforation could be - if the cleaner is too thick, it could fill the
holes and you would have to clear them out with a powerful vacuum or tooth
pick. I use saddle soap to clean and condition the leather as advised by the
dealer. When it is sparingly applied to a damp cloth and worked into a thin
lotion, it won't fill the holes. Also, Saddle Soap does not appear to alter
the leathers factory sheen.

I think he meant "spilt" as in "spilled", not split.
I have owned two different cars with perforated leather, an '02 Pathfinder
and a '92 Oldsmobile van. Never had to deal with a large spill, but the
smaller splash every now and then has not been a problem. The holes are so
small that large amounts of fluids did not seem to suck into the seat. If
you don't want to be constantly cleaning the seats, I recommend you go for
black or charcoal dyed leather and avoid the light tans as they constantly
look dirty.

I have a 2003 EL with beige leather. It has been great so far, and hasn't
gotten overly dirty. I am happy with mine. The heated seats are nice in
Calgary winters.
GO FLAMES GO!
