I have read so many reviews of the tl, and everyone was very
positive.
Checking on the jd powers on initital satisfaction the 2004 gets
very load grades on mechanical and interior quality. Why the big
descrepancy?

I guess they asked different people ;-|

As for me, zero complaints. Well, ok, one -- the power seat memory
thing. I'm the only one who drives the car so it's not much of an issue
for me.

JD Power certainly seems to contradict most anecdotal evidence on the
Internet (for whatever that's worth). Perhaps it was the complaints
about the tires that reduced the rating. While I haven't had any
problems, it seems to be that a large number of people have received bad
tires. I know tires aren't mechanical, but they are part of steering and
suspension.

As for interior quality -- hard to guess. I know some people have
problems with the headliner and with wrinkles in the seat. Wrinkles in
the seats; it facinates me that people really care about that. Tears I
can understand, but wrinkles? But I digress...

You'd think a car that gets only two out of five would have pieces
falling off right and left, and customers would be demanding recalls,
all of which seems very far from the truth.
