First, I have an RSX-S with 6 speed manual. As much as I like driving
manual, I also get
sick and tired of it in the city. I also don't drive my car as hard as I
could because there's
just too much chance of a mis-shift blowing the engine. It does not matter
how good of a driver
anyone says they are, accidentel mis shifts still happen. Today I mis
shifted the car from second
back to first which was the first time I had ever done that. I was at
7500rpm when I shifted and
caught the mis shift so I barely hit 8100rpm (I saw the needle). Sometimes
I think my next
car will be an automatic sport shift. Stuck in bumper to bumper barely
moving traffic with a manual
is such a pain in the butt........
unless finely tuned, a auto sport shift is not that great.

Well, I suppose first we might define what exactly you mean by a missed shift,
or mis-shift? Do you mean poking it into 4th when you meant 5th? 1st when
you meant 2nd? Or Reverse when you meant 3rd?
First off, I ain't saying I'm the world's greatest driver, but I've been driving
manuals for close to forty years, working on a million miles driven, and have
never accidentally shifted into reverse, or first instead of fourth or fifth,
etc.
We might postulate that if a guy is really trying to speed shift, and grabbing
gears
as fast as he can, maybe he might hit third instead of fifth or something
similar.
What I'm trying to say in a nice way, try a little less excitedness and rush,
and
just a little bit more deliberateness and care ... =8^)
As far as blowing the engine, I won't say all cars, but most have rev limiters
built
into them, which ought to reduce the chance that you're engine will blow.
Engine
cuts out at xxxx rpm, before engine goes south. Unless you've chipped your car
and removed the rev limiter ... those who live by the sword, die by the sword.
"I don't drive my car as hard as I could ..." Jeez, how hard you wanna drive,
guy?
I'm no stranger to triple digits, but I have noted this remarkable phenomena
called
cause and effect, wherein thrashing the crap out of my car causes it to not
last very long. Yeah, you could maximize how hard you drive, bumping off the
rev limiter (if present) on each shift, waiting until the absolute very last
moment
to slam on the brakes, taking each corner at warp speed. Interestingly enough,
they don't even do that in fookin' race cars during a race ... because it won't
last the whole car. Smoothness rules.
<clambering off soapbox>
I understand what you say about living in the city, though. Constantly having
to
shift, clutch, etc. in stop-and-go traffic sucks. Manys the time an automatic
seemed mighty attractive under those conditions.

If I'm near red-line in third gear, and I miss-shift into second and
let the clutch up, exactly how is a rev limiter going to save my
engine's a.s?

My first car was a standard, after that I swore I would never own another
standard until I had enough money to have a second 'fun' car.

Just curious what gear you guys used in bumper to bumper traffic... I live
in Northern VA and I have to go around the beltway during rush hour traffic.
Do you use 1st or 2nd the most?
1st sucks cuz it revs too high and I end up shifting to 2nd anyway. 2nd is
nice but sometimes I need to come to a complete stop. I hate shifting too
many times especially in rush hour traffic. Is it bad to start in 2nd gear?

I was driving an '84 VW Jetta and it would stall if I tried that, but ya, I
used to spend most of the time in traffic in 2nd.

Yes , sometimes I would like to have a "1.5" gear .
I used to start E2 V12 jag in third gear and go up to more than 100
M/H without changing gear.
The Integra must turn 3 times faster to get to the same number of
explosions as a V12. So running the Acura at 3,000 is the same as
running the Jag at 1,000
City driving a manual V12 in the city is very easy with a second
gear.

Yeah .. . but you can pass the gas station in the 'Teg while the Jag
is fueling up "again" :-)

Bill
So apparently the solution would be to have a V12 engine with the same
displacing as the present Acura engine and the consumption would be
about the same.
I believe it was done many years ago. To costly.
