Has anyone found a clean way to install the XM portable unit adaptor in a 2000 RL? I want to purchase the adaptor, but am wary of cheesing the cabling and antenna mount.

This isn't complicated.  If you're not a totally critical listener,
get a Roady2 with the built-in wireless FM Modulator.  If you want
something closer to a perfect install, get a Commander and use the FM
Wired Mod.  The antenna isn't a big deal.

One thing though -- the new Roady2 uses the Satellite antenna to
transmit to the FM antenna in your car, too.  So the exterior mount
works pretty well.  I'm hearing from people who think the new wireless
sounds pretty damned good.
