Question on '92 Integra.

Hi all,
I'm a newbie to this forum. My daughter is looking at buying her first car
which is a '92 Integra. It has 174,000 Km (108,000 miles) on it and is in
good shape inside and out.
I have been a Nissan owner for the past 10 years and am wondering if the
timing belt is as much of an issue with the Integra as it is for the
Nissans? Also what are the known issues I should look for with this car?

I bought my '92 Teg (GS, I believe, & non-VTEC) with in Aug. of '99, with
~114k on it. Timing belt is important to change at least every 60-70k _from
what I hear_. I've had my share of problems with her, such as CV
boots/axles. Besides the axles & control arms being replaced, I've replaced
the radiator & the (R-12) a/c fixed at $1k. Brakes have needed attention
too, like the ABS cylinder replaced twice (some just say to disconnect it
altogether, which I would not do). Also needed tune ups & ignition coil.
She's needed some other things, not major, also, but I gotta run. I love my
car.

Interference engine, 60k miles, don't scrimp.

The brake discs easily warp, keep monkeys away from your lug nuts

Some had bad master cylinders, see that it was replaced.

Master relay suffers from a cold soldered joint, see that it was
replaced.

Definitely look in to the timing belt and scheduled maintenance. The
timing belt should have been replaced by now, and if not, you should
have it done soon (preferably by a dealer or reputable shop, this
should cost around $800 American). I had an '89 Integra that went to
170,000 miles with scheduled maintenance and was still running (it was
in need to major work at that time and I decided to get a '97 Integra
which I am currently driving). These are good vehicles. Remember the
Oil Change very 3000 miles rule.

$800 American for the timing belt change is out to lunch. Got mine done
at the local Honda dealership for under $200 Canadian!!

If you're going to change the timing belt you might as well change
the water pump, any other belts and have the valve cover gasket
checked/replaced. This, plus a tune-up could run you $800 but it's an
80-90,000 mile event.
