Ignitor replacement (To OEM or not to OEM)

Hi All

For my wife's non starting integra I ordered a new coil, which looks
bad. Now I am wondering if I should get an ignitor (ICM) as well. A
bad coil may have done some some damage to the driver.

The dealer wants to hose me for $205 but found one on the net for $65
(Beck/Arnley 1800218) -- I am sure this is not an OEM unit, but it
can't be anything sophisticated, right? It is just a switching
transistor circuit - maybe a darlington somewhere with good cooling
and back EMF protection. Nothing special, one would imagine..

Is it ok to get one of these aftermarket ignitors?
Any suggestion or experiences with one of these would be very much
appreciated.
Thanks!

Regards,
Remcco

I just replaced the ignitor in my daughter's 93 Honda Accord with a
Beck-Arnley part and it worked just fine. $65 is a decent price. (NAPA
wanted $91 and had it in stock - I got it with a company discount.) The guy
at NAPA had a coil, but as he blew the dust off he mentioned he rarely sells
any of them. He sells a bunch of the ignitors.

Thanks, Mike.
Appriate you relating your experience and got the aftermarket part.

The coil measures like a transformer but just looks funky -- it has
discoloration and doesn't feel smooth on some surfaces. Perhaps it got
hot, which is not normal. It almost looks like the insulation has
broken down and has been arcing through, so don't want to take the
risk by not replacing it (that might take the icm out again, I
suspect).

Best regards,
Remco

Sounds like a plan, Remco!
