Group;

My 89 Legend is giving out at 268,000 and I was looking at a 93 with only
84000 miles.  MSN has an owner feedback area that indicates most owners love
their cars but repairs are expensive.  A couple of owners thought their cars
were junk. However, does anyone on this group have experience with repairs
on 91 to 95 Legends they can comment on, especially cost of repairs?

YES!!! beware of engine damage!!! very expensive to repair I ended up
doing it myself, cylinder head repair, lots of sand paper to sand down
the melted metal, re-used the metal head gasket (a big no no unless you
know what your doing) a new head gasket is around $300! by itself. very
nice to drive though and comfortable. just make sure you do all the
services. I had a blocked oil pickup screen in the bottom of the engine.
the bad thing about these engines is that they are front wheel drive and
the engine is north/south mounted meaning you have to take the engine
out of the car to get the sump off. well i think mine was a '90 but
probably same engine arrangement where the driveshaft goes through the sump.

The engine model was G20A and the other similar engine is G25A.

Caleb;

Thanks for the post.  Your '90 is the same as my '89.  My engine has not
been apart except for timing belt changes.  Hope I don't need a $300 head
gasket.

I have a '93 Legend, and while the costs are somewhat high, I don't
think they have hit excessive yet. I've had the CV boots replaced,
also had the timing belts and other associated belts replaced recently
(just hit 106K miles at the time).  Total for 1 CV boot, timing belt,
water pump, alternator belt etc was under $900 at the dealership.

Make sure you have it checked out. At 84,000 you are starting to close
in on the range where they suggest timing belt etc. I think the
recommended is 90 or 95K for the belts, but I strung it out a little
farther. You are rolling the dice when doing that though. Also, in my
experience as well as with some other friends, around 100K miles you
may need to do CV boots, and possibly wheel bearings. I had the wheel
bearings replaced in the spring and it ran about $600.

Hope this helps.

Thanks oskiller.  The costs are high.

My daughter's '93 Honda Accord needed a timing belt when we bought it - at
163K miles, it couldn't wait another day. I paid $700 to an independent
mechanic for the job, which included a water pump and two tensioners. Many
modern cars have the same issue, and at about the same cost.

That is true. And it all depends upon how you look at the cost. To
change all the belts, water pump etc is roughly 5-6 hours of labor
plus the cost of parts.

That being said, I could have had the work done at an independant shop
here that specializes in Honda and Acura for about $600 total for the
boot, belts, pump etc, but the problem is they are out of the way for
me, and I wasn't going to be able to coordinate a time for pick during
their normal business hours. Stinks that I work about 1 hour in the
opposite direction of their place.

And as Mike said, most modern cards are going to cost you a pretty
penny when you have to get to those components.

I have a 93 with 115k on it. It burns oil big time. I have not had it
checked but I am afraid it will be expensive. I have had the car many years
and took great care of it. I also need new speakers. Any idea where to get
good replacements cheap?
