My 04 TL, 12k miles, floormats look like crap. A super nice car with crappy
floormats does not make sense. Is anyone else having the same problem?

I have been covering mine with same color towels.  First thing I did to my
mats was
Scotch Gaurd the heck out of them.

I agree, the quality is disappointing.

I agree that those carpet floor mats are about equal to the economy car
mats sold at Wal-Mart.

The dealer sells heavy duty black rubber TL mats as well as a trunk liner.
I recall the mats retailing for some big $$ like $160.00.  I purchase mine
on E-bay, new, from a dealership who was discounting about 50%.

These mats are made specifically for the TL and they look OK since the
black rubber blends nicely with the black upholstery trim.  And, they are
extremely durable.  A must have, in my opinion, for bad weather.

The problem with rubber floor mats is that the water will slosh around
and end up outside the mat. The carpet floor mats are better because
they absorb the water.

I put 2 and 2 together and got 22.

There are different types of rubber mats.  The cheapest kind are thin and
don't really hold any water.  The bad weather type have grooves 1/2" deep
and hold the water very well.  Plus ice and mud.  They let you see exactly
how much gunk is coming in, and are easy enough to clean--plus they prevent
heel holes.

Rubber mats are the first thing I buy for a new car.

I removed my 1/2" deep rubber mats the other day. I then sucked out
about 2 cups of water from the floor of the car with my carpet
cleaner. Then I put the carpeted mats back in.

To each his own but carpet mats leave the floor even more exposed.  All the
water will soak in, and is very slow to dry, plus if there's anywhere near 2
cups worth it'll run off the edge and onto the floor.  It'll soak through
the floor carpet and promote mold or corrosion.

It seems that you either track a LOT of water into your car or have a leak.

Indeed.
