90 legend L coupe starting problem

My 90 Legend L coupe with auto trans has an intermittent starting
problem. Occasionally when I turn the key nothing happens. No click,
no dimming of the lights, nothing. Sometimes you have to try several
times to get it to start. When it does start, the engine cranks
quickly and starts right up. The battery is new and the starter motor
has less than 10K miles.

It seems like the problem is in the ignition switch or at least
upstream of the starter solenoid. My Chilton manual shows the ignition
switch wired directly to the solenoid. So does my Haynes manual, but
ONLY for A/T *base* models; according to them the L and LS models have
a starter relay as part of the security system.

My questions:

Does the L model indeed use a relay?

If so, where is it?

Any other suggestions?

Does your "P" (park) light on the dash come on?  Do you even have any
troubles getting your key out?

Yes the P light comes on, and when it doesn't want to crank, it
doesn't matter if the trans is in PARK or NEUTRAL. No problem taking
the key out.

Natman;

I have an 89 Legend Coupe. and the silver shop manual.

All Legend coupes use a relay under the dash.  The L and LS also have a
security control unit under the driver's seat.  All legends have a Neutral
safety switch (A/T only).  These are the only "controls" outside of the
starter itself.

What more can I answer?

Is the starter relay part of the Main Relay that also controls the
fuel injection?

If not, exactly which relay is it?

Does the Security system allow or deny access to ground for the
starter relay? Based on what conditions?

I sent you some pictures from the manual.

Does you air conditioner work?  Have you had it looked at?

Do you leak oil?  I started to in the last 6-8 months; it's alot of oil.  I
have 272000 miles though.

Thanks for the pics.

The air conditioner works perfectly.

No major leaks, some minor seepage from the valve covers.
