I sometimes leave my cruise control on for extended periods on my '01
TL (I forget to turn it off). I'm wondering if there is some kind of
vacuum pump that might suffer because of that.

Nope.

The cruise turns off automatically whenever you tap the brake pedal, or
whenever you drop below 25 mph.

No worries.

I understand that. What I'm wondering about is the main switch on the
dashboard, the one with the little green light.

It just shows the system is on and ready to receive input from you. If you
never input anything, it will just keep waiting.

You're meant to turn it off when not in use (or in inappropriate
situations) to prevent /accidental/ activation.
