Well, I just got a call from my mother - her transmission in her '03 TL
type S decided to take a sh.t.
She took it to a local tranny place and they said its not the oil but
its goign to be a major repair.

I went onto the hondatransmissionsettlement.com website and downloaded
the proposed settlement PDF and sent it to my parents and I suppose that
should lead them on some insight as what to do next.
Interesting how my 2001 CL-S  got an extended warranty on the tranny and
it didn't quit.

Why didn't she take it to an Acura dealer? Is it out of the extended
transmission warranty?

She wasn't aware of the extended warranty.  We're researching that now,
and the dealer will be contacted tomorrow morning.
I'm a bit out of the loop, so I'm guessing she'll update me as time goes
on.
Call me clairvoyant but I have a feeling she will be borrowing my CL and
I'll be walking to work very soon.

This is all available online.

Your transmission is subject to at least three TSBs and one Safety Recall.

Have your Acura dealer print off these documents:
02-027 (TSB; warranty extension to 7yrs/100K miles)
03-002 (TSB; 3rd clutch pack worn)
04-020 (TSB; 2nd gear inspection)
04V176000, P30/P31 (Safety Recall document)

The repair will either be free to you, or come at a considerable discount.

Never bring a car this new to a transmission shop. They certainly know
about this commmon and well-known problem and its fixes, but will be
unlikely to risk losing work by telling you about it.

The dealer is covering it under warranty.  Kickass.

Excellent! Except the dealer is covering nothing. HONDA is paying the
dealer back for the repair. The dealer is NOT "Honda".

Honda has been pretty generous in fixing these problems.

Well, I'm giving mom my car for a while.
I get to walk to work - its not far but watch the temperature reach
Antarctic ranges starting...  now.
