When you crank and the car does not fire up, does the tach needle jiggle
just a tiny bit, or is it dead-still?

Sounds like it might be the timing belt. Been there, done that. Not good.

Same thing happened to my Teg a few years ago. Just went dead. Nothing. Then
turned out to be ignition coil. Replaced that & distributer while mechanic
was at it. Get 'er done!!

Bad idea. Check out the behavior of that tach first, as I originally
suggested.
