You read right. That is what my Integra LS is getting right now. It's
been getting the most severe and worst gas mileage the last 2 weeks.
Driving 30 miles dropped by gas tank level by a third. My car is
completely stock and has an automatic transmission with 77K on the
clock. I drive my car reasonably well and have taken care of it, but
my mileage and performance have both been dessimated. The car has been
idling rougher when in drive. The car starts and runs normally with no
problem, the mileage is just horrible.
Any ideas or clues on why this would be happening and how I can fix it
? I previously posted about a gassy smell coming from my car, could
this possibly be fuel not burning properly ? I was going to go in for
a tune up and see what happens, but my car has recently had it's
timing belt, water pump replaced, and PCV Valve replaced. Where should I
be looking for these trouble signs ? What should I look out for when
taking it the mechanic ?
Would a clogged catalytic converter do this ?
Could this be a problem with fuel/air mixture not combusting ?
What about a fuel pump system problem ?
This is frustrating me immensly especially with these gas prices. I
hope someone can please help me with reclaiming my lost engine power
and gas mileage. Many Thanks !

In order, I'd be concerned about:
1. the catalytic converter and/or oxygen sensor.
2. whether all cylinders were firing. Check or replace plugs and wires on all;
maybe distributor cap and rotor, too.
3. clogged fuel filter (unless the 98 Integra has one of those fuel filters in
the gas tank). clogged air filter.
Only 1 above is expensive. Items 2 and 3 may be checked/fixed by a person
reasonably handy with tools and having a half-decent shop manual

LS,
When did you last do a 'lamp test' on your dash indicators? I'd bet your
car is trying to tell you something, but the light is burned out.
Actually, the first thing that came to mind was teenagers borrowing your
car, or your gas . . . :-)
A plugged fuel filter won't mess up your mileage, just you ability to
pass or climb hills. Burnt valves or serious misfire should be showing
up on the dash, as would a plugged catalytic converter.
If your timing belt is out one tooth, your mileage will suffer, but the
performance would be terrible when the engine is still warming up. You
would have felt it trying to backfire when you tried to speed up.
Have you done visual inspections of your air filter and your coolant
levels (both)?
When did you last run a can of fuel injector cleaner thru it?
Most of this stuff is all in your fine owner's manual.

are you blowing mass amounts of white smoke? if not then i'd skip your list
below. look into the leak or the rough idle, those might be clues.

There was a guy on the Nissan groups recently with a similar problem (except
he was down to 2-3 mpg). It was an injector stuck open.

Probably a stuck injector or the timing belt was installed with the
camshaft misaligned.

I record mileage and gallons with each stop. Suddenly I
noted the day after visiting a Mobil station, why mileage
dropped from above 30 to about 20 MPG. Engine just was not
smooth. Dealer said fuel injectors were bad. I know exactly
the station that did the damage. Only helps to keep away from
that station. With injectors replaced, I immediately noticed
the smoother engine. And mileage immediately returned to
above 30 MPG. Numbers. Verify important to keep numbers and
also have those numbers for consecutive tanks.
What could be the problem on that Integra? Many which is
why we always identify good dealers so get the right answer
the first time (and yes I also have identified at least one
dealer who I don't trust - watched them blame the woman rather
than fix their installed and leaking oil filter).
IOW probably many things. But those numbers will tell when
the problem happened and when it is fixed.
