I just got a quote for my Alfa 156 to be serviced from a main dealer and
they quoted me the outragous sum of 415 GBP. It is for the 24,000 mile
service on a 156 1.9JTD. Please tell me I can get it cheaper somwhere else
and still keep my 3 year warrinty!

It's about the going rate for a 24k mile service on a prestige car.

Take your car, have a trip to Italy, do the service (regular servicing is
about 200euros), return to GB and you'll find you have extra 100GBPs in your
wallet ;-)

A friend lives out in Portugal for 6 months of the year, he times the
servicing of his 156 V6 so it falls due whilst he's out there.

Lucky bugger also has a lovely old 164 V6 in his garage in England.

Ho Ho! That's just an opening offer!! Just you wait 'till they get
your car in and say there's some 'bushes need replacement!'. They'll
soon DOUBLE that quote. If they've got your car in already and that's
the final quote..you're laughing mate - you're lucky!

Possibly not worth it! You may well need replacement parts for your
car and then you'll need that magical Alfa warranty. Parts aren't that
expensive but labour is and you need lots of it for everything you do
on a 156. I ended up getting worn parts replaced under warranty which
I was completely amazed at. It did help reduce the £900 ish bill for
24000 mile service though.

Next time you go for a service, make sure you've got £1000 in your
wallet just wanting to escape! Just remember that Alfa does to your
wallet what Domestos does to your toilet!!

Oh..I just remembered..getting the aircon serviced is 'voluntary' and
it kinda needs done every so often. I do mine every couple of years on
the 156. Factor in another £100 for that too. Alternatively, you can
let all the gas escape over time and the seals and A/C compressor will
die. At that point you get another 'outrageous' sum to pay.

I love my Alfa..I hate it's servicing costs..

You can always get the air con serviced by an independent specialist in your
own time. Your dealer will only call one in anyway.

But you'll only save about 30UKP doing so. Not a lot of comfort if the
bill is heading for 1000UKP. You also have the hassle of a service
then another part of a day taken up while the indy does your A/C.
YMMV.

>Your dealer will only call one in anyway.

Only the stupid ones! Mine (Reg Vardy) worked out that they could buy
all the kit, train their staff and then offer a full A/C service for a
cleverly pitched 100UKP and recover all their costs SO quickly the
Service Receptionist could only smile when telling me about it. Good
for them! 30UKP plus the convenience of being in a main dealership if
any Alfa specific parts etc are required plus the convenience of
getting everything done in one day is a reasonable temptation IMHO.

That sounds ideal. None of the main dealers round here sort the air con out
themselves but if they could I reckon they'd charge more than £100.

I don't use my dealer either as my car's out of warranty and they charge £65
an hour labour and they're crap! Last time I used them they charged me £130
to steam clean the engine to find the source of a leak that was due to their
incompetence in fitting a part they'd already charged the previous owner
£500 to replace a month before. Not to mention the fact that they left my
battery improperly connected after they'd finished.

pretty much most of the main agents I know do their own aircon in house
these days, it's not exactly rocket science is it.
Alfistagj - 27 Oct 2004 20:05 GMT
Just about an average rate for such a service in western europe.
Similar rates as B**/ Merc / Audi etc.
Tip:
Whenever you buy a car, take the service rates into account as well when
making your choice.
