Hello, I have misplaced my manual so can someone tell me what the yellow
'engine/ fan' shaped warning light indicates. It has just come on and is
positioned to the right of the '8' on the rev counter.

Right next to the "8"in my 156 1.8 SW (2000) is a red injector indicating
light that should light up when there is a probem with the fuel injection
system.
Red is a "danger" signal and yellow a warning only.

in my 156 1.6 from 2001 i have the same orange "engine/fan" whitch is the same
as your red "injector". If it light on you have a problem with the fuel
injection or engine management, you must go to your alfa dealer to make the
test with the computer.
Ciao

Sounds to me like your coolant level is low. Don't have that indicator on my
164, but my Mum's Jeep Cherokee has that exact light for low coolant.
