After a recommendation from catman, headed to Royston today for the
cambelt change. Got the 72k service (only done 43k though !) with the
cambelt change, tensioners and variator done. Sounds beautiful and
drives beautiful - a top job from a top man. Had the MOT done too....
All for £470 - cant complain with that (and even got a nice H reg 164
2.0TS for the day!)
All in all, highly recommded and I will be heading back there soon (need
the suspension bushes done!)

That sounds like remarkably good value for what you got done - I'd have
guessed at least ?150 more.

Thats what I thought. I was heading back thinking I would be happy (for
want of a better word!) with a bill for £550. Jamie quoted me £460 for
the 72k service (incl cambelt and tensioners, and variator), so I was
amazed to pay only £470 for a service including service belt change and
MOT !

I did the variator/belts/tensioner job myself. With parts from ebspares,
including the cam locking tool, I spent about ?400 and certainly much more
than ?70-worth of blood, sweat and tears. So I'll know better next time!

I loathe that car....

*huge* sigh of relief.

I take it you have some history with particular motor ?? Care to share
?!?! I honestly thought it was OK, for what it is. Makes me thankful for
power steering and servo-assisted brakes !

Lol... but thanks again !

He has several 164s of that age. FWIW it *does* have power assisted
steering and servo assisted brakes......

Does that give you some idea of why I hate leaving my cars with Jamie and
driving off in that barge?

For what it is, it's fine.  I just don't like 164s in general, and Jamie's
are, in all fairness, dogs.

Pleasure.  Just glad you're happy.

Suppose it shows how far they have come in the 9 years between that and
mine being built !

All of mine are *older* than that.....

There's nothing wrong with them other than they are tired.  But really not
my thing.
