Hi,

My 1997 GTV has now done 37,000 miles and I am looking to get the
timing belt replaced. Also, it seems to have a noisy variator (or
variator, not sure about the spelling) which was brought to my
knowledge by my nephew telling me it sounded like a diesel!

Anyway, I wonder if anyone could recommend a garage or mechanic in
either East Sussex (around the Hastings, Eastbourne area) or in the
Weston-Super-mare area of Someset. I have asked a main dealer and they
quoted £400 for the belt replacement (not sure about the varator
price) which seems pretty steep to me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I'll report back with
findings after the job's done.

I'll be interested, because mine's due for this too, and also has the
diesel-a-like clatter for the firt 10-20 seconds running.

?400 is a reasonable price for a main dealer.
You will probably get it cheaper and done better at specialist. Have you
thought of Monza Sport? They are highly recommended. A friend's GTV V6 is
there at the moment.

Diesel clatter is almost certainly variator. That should be done at the same
time and also worth replacing the water pump, even if it is fine, as to do
so later is much more labour.

Usually when it stops after a while, it's not the variatior.
Does yours have the hydraulic valve tappits?
Could be thick oil in cold periods taking more time to reach them.

Mine carries on even when the engine gets hot, although it comes and goes a bit.

Not sure, it's a 1.97 litre 16V t-spark.

I'll give monza try for the price and see what happens.

I went out and had a listen and it seems the noise persists, I hadn't noticed
before because when I'm driving I've usually got the stereo on by then, which
drowns out the clatter. It's not intrusive, just not very classy sounding below
3,000 rpm.
