Hello!
I know that tyres are a bit of a personal thing, and a not-irregular subject
here, but do you think you could humour me?
I am shopping for tyres for my lovely 1.8TS 156, with the big alloys
(205/55/R16 91W). After making some enquiries from local dealers of good
repute, and also etyres.com, and have made the shortlist below. I really
need a half-decent performance tyre (I live in the UK, so it needs to be
able to cope with rain!), but don't rush around like a boy-racer. Wear is
also a factor, as I am not very rich. Anyway, I need two, and the prices
below are each, inc VAT, fitting etc.
1) Dunlop SPT01: ?67
2) Bridgestone TZ200 ?67
3) Kumho (not sure which model) ?54. These are the cheapest, and come
recommended by the man in the tyre shop! Most interested in your thoughts
on these ones.
4) Dunlop SP2000: ?65 (I have these on the front wheels, and they seem OK)
5) Goodyear NCT5 ?69
6) Goodyear F1: ?76
All thoughts gratefully received!

If you're happy with the SP2000 then get another 2 and you'll have them
on all four wheels. But they seem a tad pricey compared to the Goodyear
F1.
The F1 is an awesome all-rounder especially in the wet. But it won't
give you as many miles as the SP2000 or NCT5 (the price of
performance).
Generally though I would try to use similar performance tyres at the
front & rear (not necessarily same brand & model). By that argument, it
would be best to get the SP2000.

The only one I have experience of in that lot is the NCT5's, I have them on
my 147 in a smaller size. They were fitted from new and I'm generally very
pleased with them. The front tyres lasted 15k miles and were replaced with
the same, and the rear's are still going strong at 22k.
I find them fairly noisy, and that seems to get worse as they wear down, but
grip is good wet or dry and when they do start to slide it doesn't go
suddenly.

Hi,
Although I drive a 147 still wanted to give you my opinion.
Recently had to fit 4 new tyres and went for the TZ200.
The replaced the NCT5.
So far, done 4000 mls, very content.
Good grip in dry and wet and low noise level
Don't know about durability yet, but that comes second to road handling in
my book.
Personally I'd go for the same tyres on all wheel, due to different
behaviour, but that's your choice
I would stay away from the Kumho and go for either the NCT5 or the TZ200

Hello Charlie
Check out the which report at
http://trial.which.co.uk/motoring.php?p_id=107&source=gtuk&keyword=tyres
In the past I have used Nankang Tyres and been very impressed with them,
they are a little softer than some makes but i found the balance of
performance, price and tyre life very competetive. hope this helps a bit
Thanks

I've got Goodyear F1's and they are fantastic, that is a bloody good price for
them too. Just driven home quite quick in hard rain with a lot of standing water
and unexpected floods and they didn't put a foot wrong.

Gentlemen
Very many thanks for your responses.
In the end, I plumped for the Kumho, saving myself a few quid, and to
satisfy my curiosity!
So far, they're fine. They're noticeably quieter than the Firehawks that
were supplied with the car, and there is no shortage of grip. I haven't
tried them in the wet yet, and it will be interesting so see how they wear.
Thanks again
Charlie
