Could anyone tell me if the Alfa 146 ti 1996 was developed  from a Alfa
Romeo 75 ?.

NO, the 146 is derived from the 33 which in turn is derived from the "Sud".
All started out with the 4 cyl boxer engine between 1200cc and 1700cc
In the later 145 (3-door) and 146 (4-door) models the boxer engine was
changed into the 4 cyl DOHC engine

*bzzzt* wrong answer.

The 146 is derived from the Fiat Tipo, only Alfa wedged in the old Boxer
engines from the 33 until the 16v TSparks were ready.

You're absolutely right Steve, my memory was a bit absent.......
However, I prefer saying that the 145/146 is based on the Alfa 155 platform
(like in all official Alfa documentation) rather than based on the FIAT Tipo
(but we all know the 155 and FIAT Tipo are built on the same
platform.......)
Looking back Alfa did try to cover the FIAT background. Why go through all
the hassel to convert the platform to accept the boxer engine in the first
place, and after a few years change it back to the TS & 16V engines...

Alfa couldn't get the lovely but old boxer engines anywhere near the
everytime getting stricter emission regulations so they had to switch
the engine with the modern - Fiat based and therefore probably cheaper -
Twin-Sparks. Why not any earlier? Well maybe because the boxer was just
such a great engine....?

Couldn't agree more. The boxers were perfect engines yet expensive to build.
Other advantage is the low build so the exterior designers had a lot more
freedom when designing the body and the center of gravity of the car is very
low.
Too bad they couldn't get them within the pollution limits.

And what about that delicious Barp-barp-pop-pop-pop on the overrun.
Never tired of it.  Trailing-throttle entry to the corner, pick the
apex and then nail it.  Wonderful wonderful engines.
I wasn't _so_ keen on the sound of the twin-webbers guzzling juice when
one used the choke though....

Will you *stop* it? Our Sprint is in storage ATM, and I miss it terribly.

Well, that wasn't exclusive to the boxer engines.
The good old straight 4's did sound similar with their twin double carbs;
you could even hear the difference detween the Weber/DellOrto/Solex
versions......
Without airfilter, the hissing sound......
And the backfiring......
Ahhhh those were the days.

Heh.  I remember when we bought our first Giulietta, it was summer.  The
first time we put the choke on, we thought something terminal had happened.
We were used tot a Morris Marina though.
