Friend has a 156 1.6 (49K on the clock) which has started emitting a
graunching noise (chalk on a board) when on the biting point in first at
traffic lights etc. Doesn't always do it but is becoming more common. Also
I tried releasing the clutch pedal with the handbrake on and the engine,
rather than stalling immediately, coughed along for a while before cutting
out. All of which makes me wonder if this is first signs of clutch
failure? Thoughts anyone out there with twin sparks (ordinary
transmission, NOT sellafield)??

Also anyone had to fork out for a standard 156 clutch job? What's the
damage?

Certainly sounds like it.  Seems a bit low mileage though

The above handbrake test doesn't just test the clutch, but tests the brakes
as well. Car might have coughed along because the handbrake was slipping, or
because the clutch was slipping.

Drive along at about 30. Engage 5th gear and hold the revs steady at about
3000-4000. Let the clutch straight out + if the engine drops immediately,
then the clutch is sound. If it slips then, well, its slipping.

Does sound like quite young clutch though!

Good Point

Good idea. We'll try this.

I know. But some people don't know what the handbrake is for and ride the
clutch all the time in town.... hopefully not including the former owner
of this particular 156. The screeching noise is definitely linked to the
biting point of the clutch, rather than the brakes. Will be a few days
before I see the car again to check this out. Meanwhile thanks GT & Catman.
