It took me forever to find out even what this car I had found was. The owner
wouldn't let me within 20 feet of it. After 2 years of me offering him $3500
cash, the crazy old coot sold it to a parts yard. I can buy it from them for
$600. Anyway, its a 2600 SZ. How much should I expect to shell out for resto
parts, and.. is there a single good source for parts? Engine will probably
need to be rebuilt. All the glass is there, but the rear window has gone
milky white around the edges. No visible rust. Fair chrome, dented rear
bumper (I think). Any feedback (or opinions) is very welcomed.

You are asking if you should buy it for $600?
I wonder who's the crazy coot here... :)
google around, plently of 2600 (SZ) registers and sites about.
Hard to put a value to it, but if it is in the state you described
-rust-free- add a zero, maybe even two when finished restoring.

BUY IT! There were never many made, fewer still ever made their way to
the USA and a good one is worth close to US$50,000. There was a guy who
had a black one here in CA that used to belong to Sophia Loren. He sold
his for close to US$75000 (mostly due to it's provenance. Imagine
parking YOUR -er-derriere in the same seat that once held THAT
derriere!).

A fender or a door alone would already be worth 600 or more, that's the good
news but also the bad news: parts are expensive, so a complete restoration
will also be expensive.

...and if Zagato's are anything like Bertone-built 2600's you should first
'test' out any body part that you buy, I found a door for next to nothing
for my Bertone 2600 and it does not fit! At all! (too long). Seems like they
'fitted' the body around the chassis as they would with a gentleman's suit.
That said, for 600, I'd buy it in a split second (or for 6000, btw). If
you've got the space to stash the car, what can you loose?
Engine is basically the same as a standard 2600 sprint or spider, no part
worries there.
Same goes for most of the underpinnings (shortened standard chassis),
steering, brakes..
Good luck.
Oh, and www.afra.it is a good source, but there are quite a lot of them
about. (alfaring...)
Info.
PS engine sounds like a WWII spitfire ;-)

I can almost assure you that this is the case. Both are coach-built
cars, and the Zagato has an aluminum body beaten into more-or-less the
correct shape over wooden bucks.

My sentiment exactly!

If you do not want to buy it for $600,
then I will pay you $1000 handling fee,
plus the $600 cost to buy
plus the cost to ship it to me.

Rick,
I'm in the process of doeumenting all existing 2600 SZ cars. 57 of 105 are still believed to exist. Please contact me off the newsgroup about the car you mentioned. I'd like to hear more about it.
