Assuming it is a MK1 156 and not the facelift version - I hAD this problem
once and rectified it thus...
[Full thread from the original post is here. http://tinyurl.com/ax3kl ]

If you unscrew the two capscrews in the top grille and carefully remove the
grille you can slide your hand - or a long stick / screwdriver etc.
into the duct.
You should then be able to push gently on the flap that diirects the air
flow and open it (with the fan settings set to face or screen I think )

If you have to force the flap you're set to the wrong position....STOP
SNIGGERING IN THE THE BACK THERE!!!.......

Once you have the flap open smear your fingers with either silicone grease
or vaseline and slip your hand in you....I TOLD YOU TO STOP SNIGGERING......
should then be able to lubricate the flap..OH..GROW UP.....you should than
find that the flap will assume whatever position you set on the control
without sticking....
