I have just been quoted over £400 from a local garage to change the cambelt
on my 156 2.0TS. This seems v. expensive as according to alfa the job should
take approx 3.5 hours. Can someone let me know how much this work should
cost?

Thanks
Stuart

ISTR that as about the price I was charged by my local.  To include belts
and tensioners though.

My memory may be slipping though.

That's about right for a non-Alfa dealer .... They do know what they are
facing don't they? Alfa's aren't as easy as most cars and they will need
camlocks, etc.

Echo, echo. Grab the price, but only if they are including Everything.

Alternatively, do as I do and have a friend who's an Alfa mechanic do the
full job - inc. Variator / tensioner / belt / oil / filter for £250 on his
day off :-)

400 pounds is about right provided all the tensioners etc are
included. I wouldn’t take an Alfa to any old garage though - they are
v. complicated to work on and you are best using a specialist if there
is one in your area. Failing that use a main dealer if you have to.

Rubbish. They're relatively complex, but no more so than the one on my
Passat, and I trust my local general, cheap mechanic to do that.

So long as they follow the diagrams in their 'bible', then they'll be
fine doing it.

If anything I'd trust my local guy over a dealer.

Complicated? My tame mechanic did the full job in under 1.5 hours while I
watched.

Need some special tools though; cam locks, tensioner adjusting gizmo, dial
gauge, and variator socket.

I *would* recommend taking it to a specialist though, and try and make sure
you get the latest spec tensioner which has a steel pulley instead of the
earlier white or black one.

Where are you located ? The group should be able to recommend a good local
garage.
