Hi to all,

I would need to buy family car (baby is coming this spring), so I am
thinking of buying 166 2.4 JTD, year 2001. On first sight car looks
excellent, having just 70.000 km, no damages, engine runs smoothly. Me ex
car was 156, same (2.4 JTD) engine, so I know this engine is very good
choice, but I do not know how it works with 6 gear gearbox.  Is it a good
choice as a family car (enough space for all these things you need to carry
on with you while having a baby)? Do anybody from the group experienced any
specific problems engine, body, etc. while having 166?

Thank you very much for all your replys and comments!

Cheers,
Tvrtko

The main thing that would concern me is that it's not a hatchback.
Having had two children, I can say that the baby/toddler phase above all
is when a hatchback (or estate) with a decent boot is desirable -
sometimes you want baby+pram, other times you are wanting to buy
playpen, cot and various other large and awkwardly shaped objects ...

I'm afraid that since the end of the 146, Alfa doesn't cater to this
market any more. The boot in the 147 is pathetic, and the 156 wagon
isn't much better. Unless you can find a good 146, you probably have to
take another make for a few years.

Still, even the Top Gear team have had nice things to say about the
Mondeo, so it can't be too awful!

It depends upon how well equipped you want to be.

For basic birthing it is fine. Long back seat with and head height
enough for raised knees etc., There are no cup holders, but plenty of
space for a bag of towels and a flask of water. (Cigar lighter socket
will power a heating element for the water). Boot capacity is fine
for holding a change of clothes, etc.,

For those wishing to be fully prepared whilst "having a baby", it is
difficult to see how AR166 would have room for every possible need.

Midwife, Obstetrics team incase of the need for a caesarian. Room for
incubator if the delivery is premature. Etc.,

Please remember that after the birth you will not be able to legally
move the car until the child has been wrenched from the mother's arms
and secured in an appropriate seat.
