My wife's 147 2.0TS has started to creak/squeak when turning left.

Firstly is this a common 147 issue and what is it likely to be?

Secondly it is in the third year Alfacare warranty period. The local
dealer told my wife they would charge nearly £70 to diagnose the problem
then the actual work may be covered. First I have heard of this. Any
similar experiences?

Cheers

Sounds like a conversation I overhead in the dealer the other week -
investigation at cost, work free (if applicable - don't forget the favourite
'wear and tear'!)

Anti-roll link bars. Or whatever they're called. Starts off squeeking,
then a bit of clonking over bumps, then rattling against the floorpan.
Parts are £8.50 per side on ebay...... f.ck knows what Alfa will charge.

It's possible to do it at home, the only problem likely to be rusted
bolts.

Mine's started clonking too - I guess this is treated as wear and tear?

Yup - it's the rubber bushes that have worn causing the problem.

My *spit* Marea is doing it at the moment, too. I'll have 'em done at
the next service.

Yer it's a big fat con!

When you buy the car they tell you that you get a three year warranty when
really you are getting a two year warranty with a third year cover on
"special" parts by the dealer. Same thinghappened with my clutch a few weeks
back. Alfa wanted 400 quid to rip it open and take a look and could not tell
me whether or not it would be covered by warranty. Then if it was wear and
tear it would cost me another 250 quid for a clutch and 400 quid for putting
it back together...

I decided to take it to a back street who did the whole job for 400 quid.
And a bloody good job too !

Now I am selling the car - its not been unreliable, but the cost for simple
things is over the top! It takes me an hour to change a headlamp bulb FFS
!!!

Great car - not so great to fix problems...

I think that's changed know, the third year is the full Alfa warranty too.
It
came in around the time of the face-lifted 147 but is across the range.

In my recent, and expensive, experience of 147 suspension,
creaking/squeaking
was down to a worn out lower wishbone. Clonking was down to worn out
anti-roll
bar and associated links.

The roll bar problem was in October the wishbone in December...and now the
other one has just started to squeak intermittently. My car is out of
warranty but has done less than 30k miles and I'm not very impressed!

Good luck getting yours sorted out.

Regards
Ross
