A bit of an announcement: I've sold my 156 after 3.5 years with it. Tough
decision, but the other half found the family car, a 406 estate, too big. So
I got her an Audi A2 (great car by the way), and I'm taking on the 406.
Also, as pointed out elsewhere, I'm expecting 156 values to drop with the
159 coming out. I expect this will be gradual over the next year but will
hit hard by this time in 2007. So I thought it would be a good time move my
"investment" elsewhere, so to speak.

I still have my Alfasud, so no-one can accuse me of giving up on the
marque...

Anyway, to get to the point, I thought it would be a bit of a laugh for
people to guess what I got for it :-). It's a 99/T 156 2.0 TS Sport Pack 1,
in Proteo Metallic red, fAsh (including cambelt change at 5 years), and only
36.6k miles. Standard apart from a CD/MP3 changer. Sold privately for cash
this week, in E. Anglia.

Go on, what do you reckon I got? There will be much kudos for the person who
gets the closest...

NC is disqualified from guessing as he has (or should have) the answer
already.

Considering the very low miles and presuming you feel you got a decent
price to be prepared to talk about it! £3450 ?

You win - I got £3900, which is bang on the Parkers mileage adjusted price
for the SP1 version. Unfortunately the SP1/2 versions are not covered in the
printed version of Parkers, but they can be found online. The base price in
the printed version applies to the 2.0 TS base model, without lowered
suspension, 15" not 16" wheels, etc. Parkers doesn't help by not covering
the range fully in print. Pointing out the online information definitely
helped, as well as the excellent condition of the car. People are prepared
to pay a premium for low mileage cars. In this case it was £480 extra over a
60k car, which was £3420 according to Parkers (mine: 99/T 2.0 TS 16V S1 36k
miles). Bearing in mind the cambelt has been done relatively recently, the
new owner has little to worry about on the car over the next few years apart
from wear and tear items like tyres, brakes, suspension bushes.

I sold it to the 3rd viewer within 10 days of first uploading my ad to
Autotrader. The first couple were expecting their 1st baby and weren't even
sure they wanted a 156. They had a 146Ti and were considering a Nissan
Primera or Mazda 626 as well as the 156. Claimed to want another Alfa so I
showed them how well pushchairs were swallowed by the boot. The 2nd chap was
only aware of the Parkers printed price, so he thought I was asking over the
odds at £3995 (including CD/MP3 changer) until I mentioned that this was a
higher spec version covered online only. His budget was in the low £3ks I
think and I didn't hear from him again. Both these people claimed to be
serious enough to warrant a test drive.

The eventual buyer had a budget of £3k, so he claimed, but obviously fell
for the car, and it was then just a matter of negotiating him up to as close
as possible to my asking price.

If you do a search of Autotrader, there are very few 156s that have done
under 40k miles on offer below £4k.

OTOH I went to Colchester car auction a couple of weeks ago and there were a
few high mileage 156s that didn't sell, so presumably they didn't even meet
trade price (I didn't see them go through, though). If you're prepared to
spend a few hundred on belts, bushes, brakes, variator, etc I reckon there
are some real bargains to be had, especially if you know your what to look
for, as the trade is still a little wary of them.

Bloody hell. That's insane.

12 months ago we paid £2800 for a '99V 2lt TSpark 'Lusso'.

Yes, it had significantly higher mileage (102k miles), but they changed
the belts and front drop links etc. when they got it in.

We also got a 12 month warranty.

You did well.

That's odd. In 98/99 the Lusso pack only applied to the 1.8 (just checked my
old brochures, call me an anorak if you like :-). Lusso added climate and a
few other bits on the standard 1.8. Yours is either a base model 2.0 (which
was well loaded anyway) or an early 2000 model Lusso. I'm not sure of the
exact cut-over, but according to Parkers the 2.0 Lusso wasn't available
until 2000/W.

> Yes, it had significantly higher mileage (102k miles), but they changed

Parkers says yours is worth ~£2.3k now @ 102k miles, valued on the same
basis as mine. Assuming it's the base model 2.0.

Thanks :-). But look at the mileage as years of motoring and yours had done
5-6 years more than mine. Whatever the reality about 100k+ cars, very few
people will buy them until their mileage has been "corrected" and service
history "lost". IYSWIM.

It sounds like you got a good deal, but the downside it that you'll get
peanuts for yours when you sell it, if you can find a buyer. Which is fine
if you want to keep it a few years, as depreciation is limited to £2.8k max,
and you get to drive a nice car for a few years. I went through this with a
164 2.0TS. Bought for £4k in '97 with 90k, but had to PX it to get rid of it
as no-one ever called when I advertised it at a fair price with 121k miles 3
years later.

AFAIK it's a Lusso - it's the one with wooden trim and climate - which
isn't base model 156 spec.

Parkers is wrong. Very, *very* wrong. I'd be lucky to get £2k back for
mine now. Probably even less.

True, but it's where you find the best bargains.

*shrugs*

You took a chance on pricing your car at an obscene price and were lucky
enough to find a mug punter to buy it off you.

In reality it was worth £2.5k. Fair play for having the cheek to
advertise it so far off the scale, though.

I do hope you pointed out to the buyer that he should investigate having
the cambelt changed ASAP, though..... unless you'd already had an early
change carried out.

Cambelt change at 5 years according to the original post - that was a
lot of posts ago mind!

That was all standard on the 2.0. The only way yours is a Lusso is if it has
a 1.8 engine. It's confusing because there wasn't a base spec across the
range, and the base 2.0 had almost the same spec as a 1.8 Lusso.

Blimey. £4k is nothing for a car in the south east. Crappy little 5 year old
Polos with 50k on the clock get snapped up for that sort of money. The
market's pretty strong at the monent.

You're only jealous cos I got the kudos on offer :)

It was in line with the Parkers guide, but there does seem to be a
bigger variation with 156 prices than something more mainstream. A lot
of the trade still don't seem to be keen.

The reality of it is that Parkers guide prices are more often wrong than
they are right.

I'd never value a car for buying or selling based on the fantasy prices
Parkers or What Car print in their guides - I've not known them to be
correct on a single car so far.

However, non-enthusiast car buyers can often treat them like the 'bible'
when they're buying or selling. Sometimes you get lucky because your
potential buyer has 100% trust in the Parkers prices.

Bingo! Certainly applied in my case to some extent, however, the guy did
look at other similar cars and compare prices with others on the market
before making me an offer. He even got a car expert (though not an Alfa
man*) to drive it for him before parting with his cash.

It works the other way too - it can be worth paying more than Parkers says
for an enthusiast-owned car that's had all the bushes, belts & other bits
maintained perfectly. My 164 was a good example of this as I hardly had to
spend anything on it for 30k miles and it never once let me down.

>I'm expecting 156 values to drop with the 159 coming out.

156 residuals are so low anyway that the 159 cannot make that much
difference. Alfa UK only expect to sell 3500 159s in the UK this year
- I wonder if they'll manage that?

To put depreciation into perspective, a 159 will loose more money by
taking it out of the retailer's forecourt than you got for your 156.
I've even seen the 159 2.4JTDm Lusso with a 1500UKP discount already!

> I expect this will be gradual over the next year but will
>hit hard by this time in 2007.

If there's a rush to get 159s that is. Trouble is that Joe Average
appears to be unlikely to be buying Alfa again..if he had a 156.

The sales pitch for the 159 is EXACTLY the same as the sales pitch was
for the 156 so I expect the actual average ownership experience to be
identical. Joe Public is being advised of this by the "wait and see if
it's true" comments in the media. This is not good.

Sure, once secondhand 159s start appearing in any numbers, that would
(possibly) depreciate 156 values further but that will be unlikely for
a while and it depends a bit on the reputation the 159 gains.

There's a hilarious side to all this. Having done *months* of research
before buying my 156, I'm now seeing a surprising number of
cut-'n'-paste 156 reviews being used for 159s. Some from big players.
I wonder what's going on there then?  ;-)

>So I thought it would be a good time move my
>"investment" elsewhere, so to speak.

"Investment" and Alfa..or cars in general..LOL!

<snip>
>Sold privately for cash this week, in E. Anglia.

Looking at Parkers and adjusting for mileage, 3500UKP is the VERY tops
I'd pay. So..E. Anglia looks like an excellent place to sell old
Alfas.

Looking at eBay (always bad news for Alfa owners) and no 2.0 in the
current eBay history has made near 3000UKP and only 3 made it past
2500UKP.

They already have..... you can get a perfectly decent 2lt TSpark for
