Hi

My 156 2.0TS Lusso 2002 (51 plate?) drves OK in every gear, pulls off OK but
will not rev over 2500rpm.

Any ideas before I go spending money?

Does the engine management light come on at all? It sounds like it's in a
'safe' mode where revs are limited....

Yes the engine management light is on, I have done a bit of looking on the
web and water is mentioned.
It pissed down last night so I have fingers crossed it will sort itself!

Is there a way of forcing it out of safe mode?

Not sure - the only time it's happened to me was, coincidentally, when I
drove rather quickly through a (deeper than I thought) puddle.

I assumed that a sensor probably got affected and an off/on sorted the rev
limit - but it took a phone call and booking at dealers for it to decide to
clear the waning of it's own accord! (dried out I guess)

It's usually the Air Flow Meter (AFM of MAF) in the intake system. It's
a black plastic unit just to the right of the engine cover. Sort of
sticks out to the left of the intake piping.

One trick is to disconnect it and see if the car runs better.

A good nights sleep seems to have fixed it.

Same as mine then - I wonder if you did get moisture in a connection
somewhere as I suspected when I has the same....

I see a money spinning idea.

Well, if it's intermittent it sounds like a connection rather than broken...
so maybe the water is a red herring (appropriately!)

Its working again!
I think it is the water, other half gave it a jetwash.
I spose this is the fun of Alfa ownership which some speak of.

To be fair to it, even only revving to 2500 it is still a capable vehicle.
