Induction systems

OK, it's like this

Went to change the air filter on my '98 156 only to find that (like all
the series ones) the fixings on the air box were utterly FUBAR.  Some PO
had molished some screws in to hold the 'cap' on, but getting them out
without buggering them up was not possible.

So, I now have an air box that I am not at all convinced is 100% airtight.

Looking around, there are none on ebay, and I dread to think what Alfa
would charge for one.  So (prompted by SteveH) I started considering
induction systems.  Not to gain any more power but simply to get rid of
the screwed air box.

£68 off ebay seems a reasonable price, but in the local car 'spares'
emporium I noticed some 'direct' filters that effectively plug into the
'raw' end of the intake pipe.  There are rather a lot cheaper (like
about £20) which appeals.

So, the question is this, what's the benefit of the 'induction' kit,
they don't appear to have any ram effect, or indeed (in most cases)
actually have any ducting for colder air.  Or should I just get a basic
one and save my cash?

The proper kits usually have some extra bits and pieces for correctly
blanking / re-routing vacuum pipes and / or electrical connections.

Can't see that there are any.  It's a tube with a box on it

I had the same problem with mine. 2 of 3 (IIRC) bolts seized to the captive
nuts. Having got them out I fixed the problem easily. All you need to do is
weld in new nuts. Just put a new standard nut onto one of the bolts, hold
the bolt in pliers, heat the nut up with a blowtorch and press it into the
hole where the original captive nut was. The plastic melts around the nut
and holds it in place. Re-assemble with copper grease to prevent corrosion
and problem solved.

Hopefully this'll work on yours if the PO hasn't done too much damage. If
not check the price of an airbox, I have a vague recollection that they're
not too obscenely priced.

I think I took some photos at the time if anyone wants to host them.
