156 gear knob removal

I got our 156 back from the garage yesterday, went to Toys R Us today to
find summat for the lad for Chrismas and the dog chewed hell out of the gear
knob the bastard.

Unfortunately, unlike our Multipla, simply changing gear isn't enough to
remove it, how do I get it off?

Its a leather one in case they aren't all the same, on a 2002.

I had a dog like that, not only the gear knob, but also all aircon
buttons........
Just apply some (?) violant force.
The knob has a hard plastic internal which is pushed (while hot) over a sort
of spline on the top of the steel lever rod, so it is really fixed!!
Take an adjustable wrench, grab the knob by the cylindrical "bottom" and
turn the wrench by 90dgr. The plastic will crack. Pull off the knob.
PS
You'll neve be able to use that knob again.

Sometimes written in full as:

<AOL>Me Too!</AOL>

If you're not familiar with HTML - it is joke mark-up that signifies:

<entering AOL mode> Making comment <exiting AOL mode>

It refers to the habit of AOLers of "contributing" to usenet discussions by
simply adding "Me too!" without making any significant input.

There's an element of self-mockery when used knowingly.

Nice one, thanks for that.

I guess it isn't massively unlike posts which are followed by several
instances of LOL.

Cheers,

First of all, it is important to know if you have a petrol or diesel engine,
because the diesel versions (and maybe the 2.5 V6 petrol) have a different
reverse gear lock mechanism.

In this (second) case, NEVER TURN it 90 degrees, as someone told you, you'll
broke the knob and maybe damage the leverage mechanics!

The right, easier, faster and "reversible" way to pull the knob off, if you
have the reverse gear lock mechanism, is the one that follows:

1) get a 32mm fixed open wrench (i.e.
http://images.usag.it/l4_350x350/248.jpg)
2) put it under the knob, you'll note that it fits almost perfectly
3) take a hammer (not too heavy) and start beating (not too hard) the wrench
from downside up
4) the knob will get off in few seconds!

HTH, good luck!

P.s. = Sorry for my english, but I'm Italian! ;)

Will this work with a manual T-Spark knob too? It seems to be stuck om quite
firmly ;-)

Sorry, don't know that. I can give a look about that at the DTE Service
Manual.

Happy new 2007!

That'd be great :) Used to have one of those (DTE) but it refused to run
after an software update.
