Alfa 156 - No Permanent Electric Supply

Hi,

I have just bought a 156 (2.0 TS Selespeed). I was pretty thorough when
checking it over. However, after only one day I have found something that I
missed. And surprise, surprise it is an electrical problem. I am hoping,
however, that there is a simple solution.

It would appear that anything that uses a battery feed even when the
ignition is off & key removed is NOT getting power when in that state, but
power IS being provided while the ignition is on.

E.g.:
       Clock
       Interior Lights

I have also noticed that the cigarette lighter socket doesn't appear to work
at all. Related?

I apologise if this is something REALLY simple, such as a fuse, but having
only just got it I have not yet had time to investigate properly.

One other thing. I went to see the car already in the knowledge that one of
the door mirros was broken. Turns out it only needs the plastic casing and
glass. However, having trouble locating anything but WHOLE mirror
assemblies. Is there anywhere that I should be able to get just the glass &
just the plastic casing? I had to get a plastic casing for a 155 mirror
about 7 years ago, but for the life of me can't remember where I got it.

Many Thanks,
Simon

Fuse.  I would suspect.

Unlikley IMHO.

See above :)  No idea which one, but it's certainly where I would start
looking.  Does the central locking work?

I think this has been mentioned before. Ebay is the only answer

You could get the glass in many places, including halfords (sorry!). For the
casing, you have 4 options - complete new wing mirror, a scrapyard, ebay, or
live with it broken!

I asked this very question about a year (maybe more) ago. I still have a
broken mirror casing! Can't find anything other than a couple of hundred
pound, 'entire mirror' replacement. Ebay has had a few mirrors go past, but
most are the old black ones and the 2 colour coded ones, were the wrong
colour. I simply can't be bothered buying a black one and undercoating, then
spraying it the original colour of my car, which has now had 4 years to
fade, so they wouldn't match anyway!

On the wiring front - perhaps the previous owner has done something to the
wiring. I know the headlights and some other powerdrains are cut when the
ignition is off - perhaps things has been modified to apply to both
circuits. God knows why?

You don't say what age the car is....

...have the whole assemby for the earlier 156s for about £70 + vat, and a
primed-ready-for-painting version for the later 156s at about £80 + VAT.

Cheers

A good price, but we just want the casing, we don't need the electronics or
the glass.

The car is a 99 V.

Well, as  Iwas told, it would appear that you CANNOT buy just the plastic
casing for the door mirrors. How strange!

I have ordered a couple form someone breaking a car on EBay. They are only
the black plastic ones, but my car is black anyway, so won't look too bad. I
will probably one day decide to prime & paint them, but not yet.

I have not yet had a chance to check out the electrical issue. Will check
through all the fuses on the weekend. Fingers crossed that is all it is.

Thanks for your input.

OK. All sorted now.

- New mirrors from Ebay for £50 the pair. Not colour coded, but the car is
black any way. May still paint them later on, but not too worried about it
at the moment.

- Fuse number 12 was blown. When I replaced it, all the items requiring
permanent supply started working again. However, all the check lights, etc
on the dash came on and stayed on. After a couple of minutes realised that
the previous owner had connected the permanent & ignition lives together for
the stereo. After separating these, all now ok.

- Cigarette lighter socket does now work. Just needed a bit of workingabout
the socket before it started working. Now works 1st time.

I am now a lot happier.
