156 Speedo Recall

Hi all,

You may know from a recent post I am looking for a 156 Sportwagon and I have
been offered one by a dealer. The thing is its had its Speedo replaced. So
even though it has apparently done 20,000 miles it is barely showing any
miles at all. Its a 2005 model.

Apparently the speedo was replaced by Alfa as a recall. Can anyone confirm
that this was an official recall that effected 05 plate 156's.

I just wondered if this sounds legit to you guys and would you consider
looking at the car in these circumstances.

Cheers

Haven't heard of this re-call, but do know that (in Holland)  when the
dealer replaces the speedo for a new one they set the mileages to the
original one.
In Holland all official dealers (and others voluntarily) are obliged to
inform a central database about the mileages of every car they put their
hands on.
This way you can always trace the mileage of a car.
So not putting the mileage on the speedo at an official re-call sounds
suspect.......

I don't know if this is an exhaustive list. I had the last recall listed
on my 03 plate 156.

Thanks Guys,

I too cannot find a recall for a Speedo problem on the 156, I could only
find the  following:-
I think I will give this car a miss - plenty more fish in the sea!

Recall History of Alfa Romeo 156 (1997 - Present):
     Date Model Recall
23 Dec 1998 built: 01/11/1997 to 31/10/1998 On some right hand drive
156 vehicles the brake master cylinder supply pipe connectors could develop
cracks and leak hydraulic fluid with a possible reduction in braking
efficiency of one of the two circuits. VINs: 907 to 56510 and 1005034 to
1060482.
04 Oct 2002 156 2.5 V6 The metal brake pipe between the master
cylinder and the ABS unit may chafe on a cable bracket. A seriously damaged
brake pipe will reduce the braking efficiency.
     11 Aug 2003 156 GTA built: 01/01/2002 to 06/06/2003 Gradual loosening
of the front suspension may result in noise and deterioration of the
suspension and handling characteristics. VINs: ZAR93200000180021 to
ZAR93200000229169 and ZAR93200001253019 to ZAR93200001316857.
26 Jan 2004 Built: 01/03/2003 to 31/03/2003 The fitting of an
incorrect connector between the brake pipe and the master cylinder may cause
the brake pipe to chafe on a power steering pipe support bracket. In the
worst case this could result in a fluid leak and a reduction in braking
efficiency.
     05 Apr 2004 156 GTA and 2.5 V6 built: 10/03/2000 to 11/03/2003 There
is a possibility that the high pressure power steering pipe may contact the
exhaust down pipe which may result in a risk of fire and loss of power
steering assistance. VINs: ZAR93200000150070 to ZAR93200000254167,
ZAR93700003154099 to ZAR93700003206538, ZAR93700005085818 to
ZAR93700005119718.

I'd put a phone call in to Alfa UK and ask them if there has been any
problems with speedos. If not, and this is an official Alfa dealer,
I'd be stirring it with the dealer and Alfa UK as they're supposed to
be improving the dealer network and lying is no improvement.

it's a 100% bona fide recall, the bad bit with it is that you can't program
mileage on a 156 speedo with an Examiner.

Maybe it would pop out and chop your head off in an accident then...?

..or is that actually good news??

what is the chopping ones head off bit about?

It's based on the assumption that most recalls are for safety reasons.
I've never, personally, experienced a recall that wasn't for safety. I
don't think manufacturers like getting sued but they also don't like
fixing non-safety issues free of charge (out of warranty). Hence I was
wondering what safety issues could occur due to a speedo?

My Triple had a recall, can't remember what it was, but it definitely
wasn't safety related.

tons of vehicles have recalls for non-safety related issues, water leaks,
software updates etc etc, this particular one was for fuel gauge
irregularities IIRC.
