Can confirm that fords that are 1'6" deep will wreck Alfa 156 diesel
engines.

It was a bad decison to take a shortcut through the lanes via the ford.
(which I've been through a few times before)
Thankfully I made it all the way out before the car died....

Car is at the dealer awaiting investigation, but judging by the huge
clunking noise it made when the AA man tried to restart it, the bill will be
big....
thank god it is a company car..

Any one else experienced this... what is likely outcome...?
Suspect that best outcome might be bent valves, but would not be surprised
if conrods have also gone for a burton...

Now running about in a temporary BMW 1 series 1.6, which (worryingly) I have
to say I quite like...!

Almost certainly. No idea where the air intake is, but if you've sucked
water in and got hydraulic lock.......
I suspect a new engine.

A 2.4, like mine, will have it in the lhs at the front just behind the
'bumper' IIRC. Also, IIRC, its about 2ft off the ground.

I can't say I'm worried at this news as, being from the wettest part
of Scotland, mine has been through some proper flooding in its
lifetime and it hasn't been a problem. This includes a *very* high
speed (dump the clutch, white knuckles and a quick prayer) blast
through a flood which caused my neighbour's car to veer off the road
and roll as well as slow speed work up to about a foot deep.

However, I would not expect a low slung Alfa like mine to be able to
survive much more than about 12 inches of water regardless. 1'6" will
be pushing your luck with many cars.

I'd wonder about the air intake side of the turbo being lunched and
bits of metal compressor blades being sucked in to, possibly, add a
holed piston to the list of wreckage. With the VNT, even at quite low
revs the turbo would have been well spooled up.

I'd maybe want a new engine, turbo and cat (possible thermal shock
damage) depending on the actual findings, if it was mine.

I did something similar in my 2.4 JTD - came over the brow of a hill at
about 60m/h to find a  section of flooded road about 3-4 inches deep. It
rode it without any problem, but I would want to see something else go in
front of me before tackling anything deeper.

thankfully it goes soon... so don't really care about outcome too much...

My new motor is due to arrive mid-feb. Disappointingly, not an Alfa 159 SW -
like I wanted... but a Volvo V50 SW.
I more or less expect to get mine back and then wave goodbye to it...

I feel badly let down by Alfa... (9yrs and 4 alfas down the line..146,
156Mk1, 147, 156Mk2) 'cos I couldn't even get a sensible lease price on the
159 through our leasing Co...
I guess Alfa don't value the lease market enough to price them sensibly..

the dealer tells me that this is becoming a common story..

Let me know what the V50 is like, as it's on my car list.

We've postponed replacement until October (ignoring the mileage and
going for the 'or' 3 years instead - my Panzer will have around 120k on
it when it finally goes back).

I'm after a slushomatic V50 or an Audi A3 Sportback 2.0TDI DSG next.

It's not Alfa who set lease prices - it's the market.

I reckon the lease companies have hugely under-valued the 159 on the
used market. Look at how 156s held up for around 5 years before they
started to really drop in price.

My fleet manager just laughed when I asked for an Alfa.

On our list (with GE) the Volvo V50 is a no-brainer.

they are dirt cheap on a 1 yr deal. 2&3 yr deals are less attractive.

I've gone for the 2.0L Diesel Rdesign sport.

Oh well, Total Loss.
Shan't be seeing that again..

Someone will do alright out of it in the end I guess..
Someone will fit a recon engine and flog it on..

's been nice being an alfaowner.

Next stop volvo..
