The following was floating around newsgroups a year or so ago:
" Alfa Romeo to be transferred to the Ferrari-Maserati Group
- Fiat to cancel the 'put' option requiring GM to buy the auto division
- GM to give up first refusal option on sale of transfer of auto group
assets
-!!! VW/Audi to take 'significant but minority' stake in the new
Ferari-Maserati-Alfa Romeo company
- 'Powertrain', the joint GM/Fiat parts development company and platform
sharing to be unaffected "

That's not exactly true. Both Fiat Auto and Ferrari are owned by Fiat
corporate, but they are semi-autonomous subsidiaries. I.E. Fiat Auto
controls Lancia, AR and Fiat brands and Ferrari controls Maserati and
Ferrari brands. It has been suggested that Alfa Romeo would be better
served as a marque if they were removed from the struggling Fiat Auto
division and placed under the Ferrari division. I agree as does Luca Di
Montezemolo, the president of Ferrari S.P.A.

I'm asking because I found this on an italian 147 discussion Group:
centro stile all'avanguardia dove, oltre alle vetture modenesi,
potranno essere concepite e sviluppate le future Alfa Romeo
Rapidly translated this gives:
"...Giugiaro will sign the next Alfa Romeo. There are rumours about
"resizing" the Centro Stile in Arese to concentrate all the Group's
design in Turin; but on that matter, an alternative remains open,
linked to the possible entrance of the Alfa Romeo brand in the
Ferrari-Maserati group. If that hypothesis, now still at embryo
status, will materialise, after the passage of the FIat and Lancia
brands to General Motors, a new vanguard design center is in project
at Maranello, where on top of the cars from Modena (i.e. Ferrari,
ndt), could be designed and developed the future Alfa Romeo."

I never knew that. Thanks for the information!
