I have a few questions about my '87 GT.
The clear coat is peeling off the paint. It is the worst on the hood. I
can remove the clear coating with just a high-pressure sprayer. Is simply
removing the remainder of the paint from the hood and spraying a new layer
of clear coat the way to go? What kind of paint should I get for the job?
Can anyone who has had experience painting a Fiero give me any tips?
My oil pan gasket leaks horribly. I have already replaced the oil pan
gasket once. Should I have used some type of sealant when I put on the new
gasket?
Thanks in advance.

Clear coat/base coat paint systems are designed to have the clear
applied within an hour or less of the base coat, or color coat,
being applied. You could try spraying clear on, but it will look
rather bad and will start failing almost immediately. It would be
better to not put on new clear as that will reduce the amount of
work that a future painter has to do to get it ready for new paint.

Yes, a small amount of Permatex black in the corners of the pan
gasket and on the flat mating surface between the timing cover
and pan would help. Also, check the base of the distributor for
oil leaks where it goes into the block, that's a common place
for high-volume leaks.

Thanks for the info, JazzMan. Then maybe the reason why my clearcoat is
peeling is because there was too long of a delay between applications.
How difficult is the job to replace the distributor seal?

If it was an aftermarket paint job there could be any number
of reasons for failure of the clearcoat bond to the basecoat.

Not all that hard if you've got some basic tools and a timing
light. If you see a puddle of oil at the base of the distributor,
then you should replace the O-ring. Here's what it looks like:

Jazz, how much does your web site cost you per month?
your pages are so helpful that you must get a lot of traffic
and that usually means extra costs
just curious

It comes with my Internet America account. It was a deal they
had back when I signed up in '95-96. Now they charge some
annual amount. I only have 10 megs, so I'm constantly having
to remove stuff to put new stuff up.

If you can blow off the clear on the entire car, & there is no damage, then you can get away with water sanding the color with 1000 grit wet paper, blowing a minimum amount of basecoat, & clearing it. You can do the same with just the hood if you can get basecoat to match what's on the car.
Thinking of selling? How much & where are you? Any pics?
