3.4 engines

Most of the info I find about replacing the standard Fiero engine with a 3.4
engine concerns using a Camaro or other front engine/rear drive car.  What
about using an engine from a '96 or later Trans Sport?  Wouldn't the starter be
in the right place?  Wouldn't that mean it's almost a drop-in?  What am I
missing?

Thanx

The two main issues with using the 3.4 are relocating the
starter holes and the head design. Let
me go into a little detail, first with the iron vs. aluminum
head designs. The combustion chamber, hence piston design,
is completely different between the two heads, so the only
way to swap iron heads onto a motor that had aluminum heads
is to change the pistons, too. Why would this matter, you
ask? Well, what makes the 3.4 swap so appealing is that all
of the Fiero injection and exhaust system bolts right on,
but it only fits the iron heads. The aluminum heads are
totally different and you cannot use any of the Fiero's
stock intake or injection, or the exhaust for that matter.
So, if you want to use an aluminum head motor and keep the
Fiero systems about the only part of the 3.4 that can be used
is the block, crank, and connecting rods.

That brings us to the starter. GM puts the starter on the
left side of the engine as viewed from the front on all
their longitudinal mounted engines so as to provide clearance
for the steering mechanism. On transverse mounted engines
GM put the starter on the opposite side of the block because
they wanted to run the transmission housing down the left,
now rear side of the block in the transverse orientation.

Now as to the Trans Sport. I do believe that this 3.4
only came with the aluminum heads, so the 3.4 swap would
be either a major systems swap using the Trans Sport ECM
and wiring harness, or a rebuild swap to convert the
motor over to iron heads and requiring purchasing new
pistons and all the attendant work to install them (boring,
honing, new rings, etc). Either way the additional work
to use the Trans Sport 3.4 would be far more involved than
using the iron headed F-body engine and moving the starter.

I hope that this makes sense.

Indeed it does, Jazzman. Clear and concise.
You really are amazing me, lad. :-)

Well!!   I appreciate the info and will not be doing EITHER of the swaps with
the 3.4 engine from my '96 Trans Sport.
