If I bought an 88 4 cyl. would I be able to put the GT taillights (ones that
say Pontiac in light up letters) on the back of it?

If you swap a fastback rear clip onto it.  The shape of the bodies are
different.

Personally, I think the combination of the 87/88 coupe body, with a fastback
clip on it is about as sexy as it comes.

Almost had a chance to make on of them. Had a non-driving accident with
my 87 coupe and had to replace the clip. Phil Randolph and I changed it
over one hot summer day recently. [Thanks again, Philo]. Had a GT clip
in the shed and pondered it for a minute or two. But no. I have the GT
clip, trunklid, bumper, wing and vents, but no tailights and windows.
Big bucks for them.

But I do like the 87-88 coupe nose best. You're right about that part.
I'm iffy on the assends though. I really liked the coupes from day one.

Is this Fastback swap hard?

Not particularly. The parts are interchangeable -- that which needs
changing anyway. You have to remove the headliner and some interior
pieces to get at the bolts in the roof. The rest are pretty accessible.

But it's easier sometimes to buy a GT and leave it at that. The reason I
considered it is: I have some of the bigger parts, AND my coupe clip,
right rear fender bottom piece, one door panel and two front fenders
were crushed. Don't ask.

I just happened to have an identical car in the yard, a parts car in the
same color and year.

The rear lights on the fastback (86-88 GT) are several
inches taller than the notchback lights so no, they
won't bolt right on. However, I've seen a car where the
rear upper bodywork was heavily modified to do this,
basically they took a fastback clip and grafted a notch
back upper roof section to it. Lots of very serious body
work to make that work, though it had an interesting
look.
