Just got a 1987 Fiero 4 cyl auto. When idling the service engine soon light
comes on then disapears while moving but today it came on while moving &
went off while stopped. Was tuned up already. While idling the exhaust
unburned gas smell is strong. Any ideas??

I saw your post in Pennocks, too.

The very first thing to do is pull stored trouble codes. To
do that, use a T-15 driver to remove the cigarette lighter
trim plate screws and the trim plate itself. Under the plate
you will see this:

Take a paperclip and unbend it, then shape it into a "U" shape.
Take this and use it to connect the GROUND and DIAGNOSTIC
terminals in the above picture, then turn the key to RUN.
Watch the engine light, it will blink. Count the blinks and
write them down. The first code will be 12 (one blink pause,
two blinks) which will repeat after a long pause. Each code
repeats three times, and after all codes are blinked out the
ECM will start at 12 again. At this point you can turn off
the key and remove the jumper.

Get back to us with the codes.

As to the rich fuel smell, that likely is a fuel leak, you
need to look for that pronto.

Joel,

I'm not trying to be a d!ck, but posting in HTML is really annoying,
especially when all that wallpaper shows up with a 2-word answer. How 'bout
plain text??

Quite right, of course. But I wonder if WEB-TVers have the option to
shut off HTML. It seems every time we get a message like that, it is a
WEBBER. No excuse, of course.

One thing that I have learned working on the older GM's is vacuum lines tend
to collapse with age.  I would replace the vacuum line on the MAP sensor.  I
have come across several vehicles with that exact problem in the past.
Bought'm fixed it and drove them home to the owners amazement.

Probably the O2 sensor... thinks the car is burning lean, and adjusts
accordingly by adding more fuel to the mix.  The check engine light WILL
come on for this problem, and WILL reset intermittently if everything
checks OK for a couple of cycles.  happened to me in my 87.
