repeating a perennial issue, I posted this to one of the mailing lists
today:
The issue with UHaul isn't weight - though, that's a factor. It's the
expected clearance. It doesn't matter what you're pulling it with - just
what you'll put on the dolly - about the Fiero.
I've done it many times, front and rear down, so, other than automatics
having to go nose down, it's a non-issue as to viability. I just tell them
it's an 86 Cavalier and they don't even blink.
OTOH, a flatbed is *heavy* - and I'd be amazed to see the combination less
than 5k pounds. You need some serious towing muscle (which means the
ability to stop as much as to go, and transmission cooling if you've got
automatic) for that.
And, I'd bet a dolly doesn't weigh much less than a thousand pounds. It
ain't insubstantial...

And when you have an accident and the insurance you bought doesn't cover
the car you are towing, THEN what do you tell 'em?

The probability of getting into an accident with a Fiero
on a tow dolly isn't any higher than any other car, and that
is a low, low probability. In fact, in all the years I've
been involved with the Fiero community I've never even heard
of it happening.
On the other hand, the probability of renting a tow dolly
if you tell them it's for a Fiero is zero, so if you need
a tow dolly you have to fudge what you tell them. It's not
a safety issue at all.

Also what works is using an Fiero when asked what you are towing.
my one buddy has an 96 S10, and I have a 98 Sonoma 4x4, only difference is
year, my V6 and his I4, and 4x4, obviously
but when he blew his clutch and had to dolly his truck home with
mine....they asked what we were trailering on my compact pickup, he said 88
Fiero....thats what I get for helping out a guy known as crazyfieromike on
Pennocks forum (I think thats his ID on there, but its his AIM nick....damn,
all these chat programs, I AM SOOOO LOST! LOL)

I've rented a tow dolly from U-Haul and told them it was for a Fiero
(Formula) -no problem

Hey, I towed an '88GT from Baltimore to San Antonio and I DID tell 'em it was a
Cavalier...but I just wondered what would have happened if I DID have an
accident. Frankly, it cost me almost $500 for the dolly. Could have had it
transported for about the same price.

I begrudgingly admit to using a U-Haul tow dolly on my 86 SE 2M6 not once,
but twice. Neither time was I even asked what I would be towing. Guess I
just got lucky?
