Gauge issues

I have 2 gauges acting up on my 87GT
First the temp  gauge doesnt get past about 45 or 50 degrees.
It moves but never past that.
When the car is off it is pegged all the way up to the left.

The oil pressure gauge works when it wants to. When you start the car it
displays but then drops  dead to the the left after a few minutes. I moved
th eneedle with my havd once and it workked for about 2 days then smae old .

Are the gauges shot???

How can I test them.

Either gauges, senders, or wiring. Do you have a volt/ohmmeter?

The pressure sender is probably bad. Either that or you might just have really low oil pressure.

I'm on the fourth one since the car was new. The first two were replaced because the pickup internal
to the pressure sender was bad. Sender #2 was filled with corrosion. The latest replacement is
because the sender was leaking oil.

The (87SE V6) sender is located just above and forward of the water-pump, right side facing forward.
Has a huge hex (2inch?) on it that is not to be used for torquing, and a small hex (.5 inch?) where
you can't see it underneath, for installation The cable is held on with a plastic cage that I took
off of mine about 70000 miles or so ago and never had the actual connector come loose. There are 3
connections on the top of the sender. I can check later if you like, but I think it is a voltage
divider. I know that unplugging the sender caused my gauge to go off-scale on the high side, so you
can check that part of the circuit the same way.

I'm sure the resistance range is in shop manual. If you need it, I'll check.

OK - There are 3 terminals on the sender, 3 tan w/black wires on the connector and the schmematic
shows only a tan wire and a ground point.

It also states 90ohms is full pressure and zero ohms is no pressure. So, one can get a 90 ohm
resistor and short the connector and see if the needle goes to max on the gage and a jumper to short
the connector and see if the needle goes to min on the gage. Disconnecting the sender is infinite
ohms and should peg the gage (which it does on mine)

The gage itself has 3 connections: Voltage in, ground, and a connection to the sender. Connection of
the sender connection to ground with the 90 ohm resistor or the jumper should give the same readings
as at the connector for the sender.

If the gage works right with the resistors, then the sender is bad.
If the gage doesn't work right, replace the gage and check it with the resistors.

Unless you have a presssure source and adapter to thread onto the sender, there is little point in
checking it directly. Saves fingers and such from the belt drive.
